An individual portrait of each member, with facsimile signature, appears beneath the group portrait: Marius Casadesus, quintone, Régina Patorni-Casadesus, harpsichord, Henri Casadesus, viola d'amore, Lucette Casadesus, viola da gamba, M. Devilliers, bass viol.
Additionally, each member of the group has signed on the upper right, with Henri Casadesus writing the following inscription in French: “To Mr. Rudolf Wurlitzer, a great friend of France and a generous Maecenas of artists, in affectionate remembrance of the Society of Ancient Instruments, New York, March 17, 1933.” Fine condition (very slight break on upper right and slightly soiled on right side).

A rare photograph and example of the early music passion in France during the first part of the 20th century. The photograph is dedicated to Rudolph Wurlitzer, President of the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company. He personally collected historical instruments and was the father of Rembert Wurlitzer, noted violin expert.

An elegant program of a dinner and concert given by the famed New York musicians’ club, “The Bohemians,” honoring the Norwegian soprano Kirsten Flagstad. She had given her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1935 and was quickly hailed as the foremost Wagnerian soprano of her time. Performers at the event included Ezio Pinza, Rosina and Josef Lhevine, and Elizabeth Rethberg. On the cover are two oval portraits of Flagstad, under which she has neatly penned her name. Overall condition for a piece of ephemera like this is excellent, even retaining the original tassel; two small stains on verso, nearly imperceptible mark on front cover. PGM-10473$325.

Large quarto. 13 pp. A few minor imperfections such as bends, a trifle split at top of spine, a little nick on middle right edge, dealer stamp on upper right corner, but overall a very good copy.

The now famous and dramatic cover by the French artist Jacqueline Zhevenet showing a locomotive. Pacific 231, an enormously popular work in all versions, was originally written for orchestra in 1923 as Mouvement Symphonique no. 1. It was the first of three works in a tryptich, the other two being Rugby (1928) and the third (1932-3) called only Mouvement Symhonique no. 3 because, as the composer explained, he wanted the music to be heard as “absolute music” rather than as the descriptive pieces the first two had become famous for.

The second Piano Concerto was started in 1912 and completed in 1913. The premiere, in which Prokofiev performed, elicited strong reactions in both directions.

The massacre, known as “Bloody Sunday,” took place on January 9, 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia. A priest, Father Gapon, led unarmed, peaceful demonstrators to the Winter Palace to deliver a petition to Tsar Nicholas II for improved working conditions, an end to the Russo-Japanese War and the introduction of universal suffrage. They were gunned down by the Imperial Guard. This event inflamed revolutionary activities in Russia and contributed to the Revolution of 1905.

Very handsome printing with engraved vignettes at the head and end of each act. Each act preceded by a plot summary on a separate page with engraved designs. Madame Sans-Gêne, based on a play by Sardou and Moreau with a libretto by Renato Simoni, had its premiere at the Metropolitan in New York January 25, 1915, under the direction of Toscanini.

The prominent French sculptor Louis Ernest Barrias was known primarily for his statuary. He was born in Paris in 1841 and worked there in the suburb of Sevrès until his death in 1905. Both his father and his brother were artists.

Plate 22 from the 1888 first edition of A.J. Hipkins' "Musical Instruments," for which William Gibbs did the now-famous chromolithographs. The depicted instrument is from the late 16th century and has an octave string used to gain a more brilliant effect. Decoratively matted with a total measurement of 13.75" h x 18" w.

Hipkins' "Musical Instruments" is a landmark in the depiction of musical instruments, using fine colored plates for the first time.

VIOLIN ICE CREAM MOLD
Antique American pewter ice cream mold in the shape of a violin. Hinged bifold mold measuring 5.75" in length. Stamped "Wheat's" on the inside of the hinge and "W" incised twice on the back. Stamped "544" on the top. Very good condition.

During the Victorian era, ice cream molds were fashionable and use to present elegant individual desserts. They were usually made of pewter and are quite heavy for the size (this one weighs almost 3/4 of a pound), both enabling the cold temperature to hold longer but also making the ice cream unmold easily. The violin shape is quite uncommon.

7 1/2 bars for piano, in an attractive decorative green border of musical instruments.

Moscheles was one of the the best pianists of his day and along with Thalberg and Liszt, a strong proponent of the Velocity School. He is particularly well-known for his friendships with Beethoven and Mendelssohn, and went on to succeed Mendelssohn as head of the Leipzig Conservatory upon the younger composer's death in 1847. He was not only a widely-played composer, but extremely influential throughout Europe and England. His 4th Concerto dates from 1823, two years after his debut in London at a time that he was teaching at the Royal Academy of Music. Domenico Dragonetti Barnett was the son of John Barnett, and after his time at the Leipzig Conservatory moved to England where he became a well-known pedagogue.

Original ink wash drawing by the English artist John Nixon. Signed and dated on lower left "JN: 1796". The subject is a caricature of a basson player with a disgruntled audience member looking on over his shoulder from above. Drawing measures 7" h sc. x 4.5" w., apparently cut out from a sketchbook. In a decorative mat with overall measurement of 12" h x 10" w.

On the verso in Nixon's hand is a list of six names "at Dinner in Twickenham Meadows under an Elm. August, 1796. Servant. Bottles & Baskets, etc."

John Nixon was born in Ireland in 1750 and died in London in 1818. He was an amateur artist and friend of the famous caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson. He frequently drew musicians and sometimes musical instruments.

The Bartholomew Fair was a summer fair held in London originating in the 12th century and which continued all the way until 1855 when it was "suppressed...by the City authorities for encouraging debauchery and public disorder" (Wikipedia).

INDIAN ANKLE-RATTLES (napur or napura)
Etched brass rattles from India with bird head and tail at extremities. Played in pairs, usually by dancers. A cotton cord goes through the bird and attaches around the ankle and the second toe. With good age, these came from a mid-20th century ethnic antiques collection. Minor erosions in a few places on the larger rattle, otherwise excellent.

Chopin and his lover George Sand took refuge in the Valdemosa monastery after his tuberculosis aroused fear among the local people. While there Chopin worked on the Preludes, the C# minor Scherzo and the C minor Polonaise Op. 40 No. 2.

The Spanish theorist Padre Eximeno was forced to leave Spain with the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. He settled in Rome where he published this his first work which, according to Grove VI, " shows a strong bias against contrapuntal rules and against linking music with his former speciality, mathematics.... Late 19th-century Spaniards rightly considered Eximeno a national hero in his polemical and theoretical battles with Tartini, Cerone, Rameau, Euler and Martini."

EARLY 18TH-CENTURY ITALIAN MAJOLICA PLATE
A charming Italian majolica plate from the Castelli factory near Naples. The painting shows four cherubs within a blue drapery-lined interior. One cherub is playing an oboe, reading from an open score. Portions of a horn and a mandolin are seen behind him. The book towards the lower edge bears a mark which probably indicates a member of the large Grue family, the primary ceramicists at Castelli during the late 17th and 18th centuries. Castelli is a small town in the hills of the Abruzzo region where the local deposits of clay encouraged the famed centuries-old tradition of hand-painted ceramics. The rich yellow ground covering the back of the plate is typical higher-end Castelli pottery. Condition is excellent.

A stunning framed ensemble consisting of a signed portrait and two of Roach's own drumsticks, also signed. The half-tone portrait is of a colored drawing. Roach is depicted seated nude in a cross-legged position, his body in stone except for the head, and his cast shadow being his drum set. It is signed in red crayon: "with love, Max Roach, 5/6/90". Max Roach, whose death just last year is still mourned by the world of music, was a pioneer of bebop and one of the great drummers of all time. He worked in many styles and with some of the greatest jazz musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins and Kenny Clarke.

Included is a letter of provenance by the Gershwin authority and biographer Edward Jablonski in which he relates that Ira Gershwin collected various Gershwin signatures and doodles and would frame them with one of Gershwin's checks and present them to friends.

STRADIVARIUS AT HIS WORKBENCH
A 19th-century oil painting, after a well-known anonymous engraving of the same period which imagines what this master craftsman might have looked like while examining a violin at his workbench. Ornate period gilt frame. The painting, which is on canvas, is in good condition other than surface crackling from age. The frame is in excellent condition except for minor chipping at extreme corner edges. The painting is 7.75" h x 9.75" w and the total framed measurement is 15.50" h x 17.50" w.

We believe that this painting was made by William Voller, an English violin maker working in London who, along with this two brothers, is known for his remarkable imitations of old Italian instruments. He did some painting and sculpting up until around 1890 and we know of one other similar portrait of Stradivari executed by him.

Les Mamelles de Tirésias, Poulenc's first opera, used as its libretto a 1905 Apollinaire play. Poulenc started it in 1939 but wrote it mostly during the summer of 1944 shortly before the end of World War II. The plot is about a wife who discards womanhood -- her breasts float away as two balloons -- and whose husband takes on the role of childbearing, producing 40,000 babies per day. After the devastation of the war, Poulenc promoted the government's call to increase population with this burlesque opera, the chorus declaiming at the end: "Frenchmen, make babies!" The opera is dedicated to Poulenc's good friend the composer Darius Milhaud, to celebrate his return from the U.S.A. after the war. The premiere was given at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in June of 1947. The eminent Russian artist Erté, who designed the décor, also designed the titlepage of the score

Liszt writes a strong and flattering letter of recommendation, in French, for the Austrian singer Feodor von Milde, addressed to Manuel Garcia, the famed singer and teacher: "A distinguished artist, Mr. Milde, a baritone in our theater, is going to London with the intention of obtaining some lessons from you. It would please me that in memory of our old friendship you would pay special attention to him and give him whatever hours it is possible for you to spare. You fill find in him a student highly recommendable from all points of view and very anxious to take advantage of all the advice you would give him. By his rare musical culture as well as his good manners which are the simplest expressions of a man perfectly 'comme il faut'..." Fine condition.

Manuel Garcia (1805-1906) was probably the greatest vocal teacher of the 19th century. He was the brother of legendary singers Maria Mailbran and Pauline Viardot. Von Milde had been a singer for Liszt in Weimar in 1848 and studied with Garcia in London in 1850.

Von Milde created the role of Telramund in Wagner's Lohengrin the very same year of this letter; the premiere was given in Weimar on August 28 and was produced by Liszt. Von Milde's wife, Rosa Agthé Milde, also sang in the production, creating the role of Elsa.

This attractive, large letter is written to the noted violinist Carl Lipinski who in 1839 took the influential post of concertmaster at the Court Orchestra in Dresden. Lipinski had a major solo concert career - he was a friend and rival of Paganini who said of him "Lipinski is the second greatest violinist in the world". Among his pupils were Joachim and Wieniawski. Schumann dedicated his "Carnaval" to him.

Clara Schumann could be called the ultimate female role model: ardent wife to the composer Robert Schumann, mother of a large family, a major concert artist who toured widely, a composer and a renowned teacher. To quote Groves VI: "...she was a masterly and authoritative interpreter of Schumann's compositions; later she became an equally admirable interpreter of Brahms, her lifelong friend. She was completely free of all mannerisms, and impressed her audiences chiefly by the earnestness of her regard for the music she played". This letter refers to one of the most beloved of Brahms' works, the Liebeslieder Waltzes for voices and piano duet (not to be confused with the "Neue Liebeslieder Waltzer" of 1874).

The trip, as President Kennedy told me last week at The White House, was a highly successful one and was of great value to our country in bettering the understanding between our people and the Russian people, so it was all worthwhile and well worth all the hard work and preparation that preceeded the tour."

Goodman goes on to write of other concerts in a hectic schedule; "so you see we have been on the move quite a bit recently" and thanks the recipient for "being a loyal fan and friend." Condition: excellent.

Based on the opus number at the head of the MS, it is probably copied from Artaria's 1800 edition of Haydn's Op. 20. This is a beautiful, crisp, very early 19th century manuscript, possibly created from the Artaria parts for use as a study score.

The composer writes that the setting of the third Mallarmé poem is finished, wishing luck on the first poem: "ça y est: le 3e poème de Mallarmé est fait. Combien vous trouverez facile le 1er au regardde celui-là! Il faut que je revoie le 2d. La respectueuse amitié de Maurice Ravel".

Ravel is referring to his "Trois Poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé, which he composed in 1913, the year of this postcard, both for voice and chamber orchestra (May, 1913) and then voice and piano. Marya Freund was a well-known Polish soprano living in Paris. She was a good friend of Ravel and an even better friend of Poulenc, Schoenberg and many other prominent composers and poets.

Fine condition. Matted in red with a gilt border and a wooden gilt frame.

Paganini playbills have become rare and sought after in recent years.

A fascinating original photograph of Stravinsky by the eminent American photographer who was known primarily for his portraits of celebrities, almost always in "environmental" postures. Creased on far left and at very top and bottom edges. Stamped Arnold Newman on verso. 11" h x 14" w. Total measurement in black faux suede mat: 16" h x 19.50" w.

This portrait is unpublished and probably dates from 1946, at the same time as the famous one of Stravinsky at the piano which became Newman's signature image.

This is perhaps the most charming of all children's songbooks, with well known children's songs arranged by no less than Charles Widor. It is primarily known for its illustrations by the French painter and illustrator Louis-Maurice Boutet de Monvel (1851-1913). It first appeared in 1883. Each of the 29 songs is beautifully illustrated, one nicer than the next and all with great wit.

Debussy is writing to change the day of an appointment with Ernest Bloch. He had met the young Swiss composer the preceding year when Bloch arrived in Paris for a year of study.

An unusual association between two 20th-century composers who are not usually thought of as related. Bloch spent a year in Paris in 1903, when he first met Debussy, and Bloch’s first published work (1904), “Historiettes au Crépuscule,” indeed shows that he was strongly influenced by Debussy's music.

Program booklet for a concert given by the Royal Philharmonic Society at Royal Festival Hall in London on Oct. 14, 1970, featuring the world premiere of Witold Lutoslawski’s Cello Concerto. Signed “M Rostroprovich” and “W Lutoslawski.” On the left is a portrait of a young Rostropovich holding his instrument, above which he has boldly penned his name. On the opposite page, Lutoslawski has written near his name above the program note about the concerto: “My warmest thanks for the performance of my music” (followed by his signature). Excellent condition.

This unusual signed program, obviously inscribed for a member of the orchestra, offers a rare association between one of the greatest cellists of our time and one of the leading composers of our time. Lutoslawski wrote the concerto for Rostropovich at a time of great political tension. Indeed, although the Polish composer believed that politics had no direct effect on his music, at the time of this concert Rostropovich’s well-known opposition to the Soviet regime was coming to a head. Shortly thereafter, he came out in support of the Soviet dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

The Cello Concerto was an enormous success. At the work’s première, Arthur Bliss presented Rostropovich with the Royal Philharmonic Society’s gold medal.
