Liszt, Franz (1811-1886)
Autograph Musical Quotation Signed
"F. Liszt". Berlin, February 21, 1842. On an album leaf measuring 5.75" h x 8.75" w. Fine condition.A stunning annotated quote of the Dante Sonata theme.
A handsome bold quotation from the renowned Hungarian composer-pianist showing a sequence of thick chords, which he evidently considered a complete unit, concluding the six measures with a double bar. Liszt used this theme in his famous piano work the The Dante Sonata. An unusual quotation above which Liszt indicates above both two key signatures and the instruction that it should be played three times.
The Dante Sonata in D minor was originally a small piece composed in late 1837 and entitled "Fragment after Dante". Liszt later revised the work and it was published in 1858 as part of Années de pèlerinage [S.161, No. 7].
