An unusual and attractive tribute to Steinway

Tcherepnin writes a particularly nice, amazingly generous and obviously genuine testimonial for the Steinway Piano company with six musical quotations from some of his compositions, including Bagatelle VI, Prélude Nostalgique I, Hommage à la Chine, 3d Piano Concerto, Expression IX, and Prélude IX. The testimonial reads:

Since the time of my youth in Russia and all through my life Steinway Piano was my dearest companion; has helped me to materialize the musical thoughts, has incited me for resarch in composition and in performance, gave me the best medium to communicate with the audience. I can not think of a more sincere way to express my relation to the beloved Steinway piano than to do it by citing just few of so many of my compositions for which Steinway was the source of inspiration. To thank Steinway as profoundly as I feel let me do it by saying it in russian wholeheartedly: Cnacudo! A. Tcherepnin.

The Russian-born composer and pianist Tcherepnin was born into a musical family (his father had been a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov) and showed a talent for music from an early age. He fled the revolution for Paris in 1921, where he began his career as a pianist and composer. Living in Japan and China (1934-1937), he returned to France and then to the U.S. in 1950. He would go on to invent his own harmonic languages for his compositions, the most famous of which combined major and minor hexachords and became known as the "Tcherepnin scale".
