Although Korngold would become one of the most important film composers in Hollywood history, he began his career writing operas and concert music. He composed Violanta at just nineteen years old. The work premiered in Munich on March 28, 1916, and owing to its initial success, enjoyed performances in Germany and abroad for several years thereafter.
