Casella, Alfredo (1883-1947)
Autograph Musical Quotation Signed
"Casella". To Kenneth Kendall. Rome, January 14, 1936. c. 5.25" h x 3.5" w. With small black-and-white portrait, likely from a magazine, pasted down at top. Tape residue along left edge (affecting treble clef) but otherwise in good condition. The Italian composer writes two bars on treble clef, signing and dating with sentiments beneath. A nice little example.
Casella belonged to the generazione dell'ottanta ("generation of the 80s"): a small group of composers who were born around 1880 and chose to concentrate on instrumental music, breaking from the generations-long focus in Italy on operatic composition. The group, which included Malipiero and Respighi, among others, became quite popular after Puccini's death in 1924, though their works are not as frequently performed today.
