Grieg, Edvard (1843-1907)
Ensemble with ALS on a Visiting Card and Portrait.
ALS Signed "Edvard Grieg". To Hofkapellmeister Fuchs. Total ensemble size: 11" h x 15" w. Fine. Grieg comments on a correction to his Piano Concerto.
The celebrated Norwegian composer has penned on the verso of his visiting card a letter to the conductor Robert Fuchs: In order to spare you unnecessary trouble, kindly note that the newly added doublings in the strings in the piano concerto are correct (re the new edition), and the corrections apply only to the wind instruments and the kettledrums… Forgive my encroachment on your Sunday rest.
The visiting card is addressed on the recto (visible from the back of the mat) and matted together with a postcard photograph of the composer.
Grieg is referring to his only piano concerto, the Concerto in A minor, op. 16 (1868). He played the premiere in Copenhagen on April 3, 1869. He revised the work in 1906-7, shortly before his death; it is the revision to which he refers here. The letter is to Robert Fuchs, Austrian composer, teacher, organist, and conductor in Vienna, of whom Brahms thought highly.
