Poulenc, Francis (1899-1963)

Carte de Visite Signed

"Francis Poulenc". n.d. A trifle soiled but fine.
A small calling card on which the eminent French composer has penned his very lively affection, dear great and admirable friend, signing in full under his name. We know, having bought it from the estate of the Polish soprano Marya Freund, that Poulenc was addressing her. Freund sang many of Poulenc's songs. She lived in Paris and she and Poulenc came to be good friends.
The Polish soprano Marya Freund came from a family In Breslau known as patron of the arts. Her uncle was the baritone and great friend of Brahms, Sir George Henschel. After she moved to Paris, among her close acquaintances there included Schoenberg, Poulenc, Milhaud, Satie, and Ravel.
