Unsigned. December 12, 1961. In excellent condition.The French composer writes to she who remains and will remain forever an Emperess of the vocal art. As a testimony of admiration and withfaithful and profound admiration. On the back, Sauguet has penned with best wishes from all, drawing a heart underneath. The visiting card is written to the Polish soprano Marya Freund, which we know from having purchased if from her son, the bass baritone Doda Conrad.
Henri Sauget was born Henri Pierre Poupard but took as his name the maiden name of his mother. He was a noted figure in musical life in France throughout most of the 20th century. His output includes operas, 26 ballets (including some commissioned from Diaghilev), four symphonies, concertos, chamber and choral music, and numerous songs, as well as film music. Besides being known as a composer, Sauguet worked as a music critic throughout the 1930s and 1940s and later founded the Composers Union.
CDV-16310$125The Polish soprano Marya Freund came from a family In Breslau known as patron of the arts. Her uncle was the baritone and great friend of Brahms, Sir George Henschel. After she moved to Paris, among her close acquaintances there included Schoenberg, Poulenc, Milhaud, Satie, and Ravel.
