Kolisch Quartet (c. 1920-c. 1940)

Signatures of the Kolisch Quartet.

September 22, [not after 1939]. In very good condition; a bit creased. Kolisch and Kuhner signatures in pencil.
The signatures of the Kolisch quartet on a quarto sheet extracted from a program booklet: Rudolf Kolisch, Felix Kuhner, Eugen Lehner, and Benar Heifetz. (Program not present). A desirable and clean example. Kolisch autograph material is scarce.

No year is provided, but given the membership of the quartet, they could not have signed after 1939.

The Kolisch Quartet began as the Neue Wiener Streichquartett in the early 1920's, founded to perform both Schoenberg's music and works from the cannon that exhibited the principles of his teaching. By 1927, though, the ensemble's mission expanded and its name changed to honor the first violinist, Rudolf Kolisch. Owing to its rigorous rehearsal habits, the quartet became known for performing from memory, including even difficult, modern works by the Second Viennese School.

This sheet was likely signed while the quartet was still based in Vienna, its home city. In 1938 operations moved to Paris because of the Nazi annexation of Austria.
