This little book contains references to Beethoven from the diary of his friend, Fanny Giannatasio del Rio. Beethoven was close to several members of the musical Giannatasio del Rio family; he wrote multiple works for them and some of their correspondence survives.

Fanny's recollections proved so immediately and enduringly popular in German, English translations were published in both 1876 and 1890.

Ludwig Nohl, the compiler, was a widely read German music scholar. He is best remembered today for discovering and first publishing Beethoven's Für Elise.
