Herbert, Victor (1859-1924)
Lunch Menu for Herbert ASCAP Commemoration at Luchow's Restaurant.
New York, 1951. 4 pp, on card stock (13" h x 10" w). Six portraits on front cover. In very good condition; still very crisp and internally clean. Covers with a few spots; front unevenly toned at top and left side.A colorful menu from Luchow's Restaurant for the unveiling of a plaque, hung there in 1951 by ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), to honor Victor Herbert. The plaque marked what became known as "Victor Herbert's Corner", the place where Herbert and eight others drafted a proposal in 1914 for the organization that would become ASCAP.
This menu includes a brief history of ASCAP, a photograph of the Herbert commemorative plaque, and a list of courses, one of which was a Chilled Dill soup a la Victor Herbert. A nice piece of important musical ephemera.
Herbert, the important American composer, conductor, and cellist, was not only the founder but also the director of ASCAP from its inception in 1914 until his death in 1924.
EPH-16293$125Luchow's was a restaurant on 14th Street at Irving Place. Owing to its proximity to the Academy of Music, Steinway Hall, and Tammany Hall, it became a favorite among the city's musicians and entertainers. Sadly, it was demolished in 1995 after having closed some nine years earlier.
