VIENNESE RABBIT ORCHESTRA

Ten-Piece Miniature Bronze Band

Probably Vienna, late 19th or early 20th century. Each figurine is c. 1" high. Individually hand-cast and hand-painted. In excellent condition.
These charming little rabbits constitute an orchestra of ten, with French horn, double bass, bass drum, cymbals, flute, violin, trumpet, clarinet, tuba and conductor with stand. All are wearing green Tyrolean hats with red feathers and Lederhosen, through the back of which stick their little cottontails.

The fad for miniature bronze figurines, commonly known now as Vienna bronzes, started in 1860, when Bohemian metalworker Franz Bergmann Sr. (1838–1894) founded a small bronze factory in Vienna. Prior to its closing in the Great Depression, a huge market had developed, with many artists making similar figurines.

We have not seen another rabbit orchestra and think that it is quite uncommon. These are well made with good detail.
