Paderewski put his concert career on hold during World War I in order to take up diplomatic work and serve as Poland's Prime Minster. After signing the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, which recognized Polish independence, Paderewski remained in diplomatic service for another three years. He returned to performance in 1922, the year before signing this program, and seamlessly picked up where he had left off: after a successful recital at Carnegie Hall, he filled the 20,000 seats of Madison Square Garden.
