BELL - CAMEROONIAN NAMJI

Mid-twentieth century. Length: 18.5" (47 cm). Stand is 5.5" square. One earring missing, a few slight abrasions to the iron, one small crack in back of head. Nonetheless, in overall fine condition.
An iron bell with internal ringer made by the Namji tribe of Cameroon. Bells like this were used during fertility ceremonies, used to favor pregnancy. The bell is of iron and the rest of it is of wood, at the top of which is a small depiction of a human head. The joint between the bell and the wooden top is wrapped in a vegetable fiber. Mounted on a stand.

This bell, a fine specimen with "good age", came from a private twentieth-century French collection.

Cameroon has more than 200 different ethnic groups and national languages. This diversity contributes to the large variety of art found there, which has become highly sought after by collectors around the world owing to the unique and artistic design.

The Namji tribe is believed to have originated in the Congo, migrating from there in the sixteenth century to Cameroon. Fertility dolls are still being made to this day, for the tourist trade of course but also to be given brides in the hope of enhanced fertility, a healthy pregnancy, and a safe birth.
