POCHETTE - TRAVELING POCHETTE & BOW BY GRANDJON

Grandjon, Jules (b. 1824)

Overall length is 22.5 ". Body length is 14". Condition of both the pochette and the bow are excellent.
A fun violin and bow for the traveler of yore.

This fascinating little assemblage and bow was named a pochette de voyage (traveling pochette) because the point was to enable someone to travel easily with a violin, assembling both the violin and the bow upon arrival at one's destination. The violin is detachable at the neck and the bow detaches at the middle. The violin is of oblong shape and slimly waisted, labelled J. Grandjon a Paris, 103 Boulevard Sebastopol et Rue Reaumur, 48; also branded Grandjon Paris 31 below the button and stamped J.G. on either side of a harp on the button. The bow is stamped J. Grandjon BTE. They are both quite uncommon and it is rare to find an original violin and bow together, this being only the second time we have had such a pair in decades.

The pochette de voyage was invented and made by Jules Grandjon, a member of the Mirecourt family of violinmakers, brother of Jules Grandjon (1824-1880). He moved to Paris while retaining a violin-making workshop in Mirecourt and is known for his small inventions including this pochette de voyage. Originally the violin and bow were sold in a small black case.
