Siloti, Alexander (1863-1945)
Autograph Transcription of J.S. Bach Siciliano (from BWV 1031).
Signed "A. Siloti". To Madame B. Koutzen. March 1929. Large quarto. 2 pp. of music (4 pp. total). A clean manuscript in very good condition. Edges with some minor tears, creases, and cellophane tape repairs (tape just affecting the ends of four staves, but all music remains clear and legible). An autograph manuscript transcription, in ink, of the Siciliano from J. S. Bach's Flute Sonata in E-flat major (BWV 1031). Signed and dated below the last stave to the wife of noted Russian-American violinist Boris Koutzen.
Though known best as a pianist and pedagogue, Siloti was also a prolific arranger. He produced over two hundred transcriptions in the course of his career, with Bach's works figuring heavily in this output.
Alexander Siloti began his studies with Nicolai Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky, and Liszt. He toured frequently and gave premieres of works by Debussy, Rimsky-Korsakov, Sibelius, and Stravinsky, among many others. Tchaikovsky entrusted him with the editing of both of his piano concertos, and he counted Eugene Istomin, Marc Blitzstein, and his cousin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, among his distinguished pupils.
