Woodward, Agnes (1872-1938)

Whistling as an Art: A Method for the Development of Tone, Technic and Style.

Carl Fischer: New York, 1925. Second Edition. Small Quarto. 115 pp. Red linen boards with gilt-stamped title at front. A very good, crisp copy (small stain on front board; dealer stamp on title page).
Agnes Woodward began her career as an opera singer before turning to the study and instruction of whistling, which, as she notes in this textbook, ranks high in comparison with other musical arts. It is not a fad. It is refined, and when properly rendered, artistic and beautiful. She opened the California School of Artistic Whistling in 1901; five additional branches would soon follow across the United States. Among her pupils were Bing Crosby, John Wayne, and Pat Boone.

This textbook was first published in 1923. The second edition followed in 1925 and, owing to its popularity, a third appeared in 1938.
