Although the title page bears the year 1872 (the year the first edition of this piano arrangement was published), McCorkle reports that based on the plate number, this particular copy was issued in the summer of 1874.

Brahms wrote the Triumphlied as a work for baritone solo, choir, and orchestra on the occasion of the German victory in the Franco-Prussian War. The work had its premiere in 1872.
