Haydn, Franz Joseph (1732-1809)
Die Jahreszeiten. Klavierauszug. [The Seasons. Piano/Vocal Score].
Breitkopf & Härtel: Leipzig, [1802, as per Hoboken]. first edition of piano/vocal score. Oblong quarto. 176 pp. With Verbesserungen (corrections) sheet tipped in at back. Three-quarter calf with marbled paper boards. In good condition. Foxed throughout, especially title page and in places heavily, but a deep impression and otherwise clean. Binding with some wear, but attractive and still tight. Altogether a nice copy.A first-edition piano/vocal score of Haydn's Die Jahreszeiten (The Seasons), issued the same year as the first full score and just one year after the oratorio's premiere. With text underlay in German and French.
The publishing history of early piano/vocal scores of The Seasons is a bit complicated. Hoboken's catalog lists three different piano/vocal scores published in 1802, one each by André, Artaria, and Breitkopf (Hoboken: Gruppe XXI, p. 59). Breitkopf's edition was the first of the three and issued with two different title pages. This copy bears the simpler of the two (as described by Hoboken). At Haydn's direction, Breitkopf was also the publisher of the first full score, issued later that same year (1802).
Haydn composed The Seasons to a libretto by Gottfried van Swieten, who had likewise provided the libretto for Die Schöpfung (The Creation). Haydn took two years to complete the oratorio, owing partly to his advanced age and partly to the enormity of the text. The premiere in April 1801 was a marked success, though The Creation remained the more popular of the two works.
