Gerbes de Feu is among Giordano's earliest works. The year after its publication, he would submit his one-act opera Marina for consideration in a contest held by the music publisher Casa Sonzogno. Although top prize went to Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana, Giordano's Marina placed sixth of 73 entries, and adapted version of it--retitled Mala vita--earned a staging at Sonzogno's expense the following season. With it, Giordano's operatic career was launched in earnest.
