An original sepia profile portrait photograph of the Canadian tenor and Metropolitan Opera general manager, shown in costume as Don Jose in Carmen and signed by him at the lower left. A handsome example of his signature.
Edward Johnson, who was better known to European audiences as Edoardo Di Giovanni, enjoyed a long and successful career as a singer and manager. Among his earliest notable performances were the Italian premieres of Il trittico and Parsifal (the latter under Toscanini) and a London debut alongside Nellie Melba in Faust. After his retirement from the stage, Johnson served as general manager of the Metropolitan Opera from 1935 to 1950.
