Matzenauer, Margaret (1881-1963)
Photograph Signed
"Margaret Matzenauer". To Gertrude Curran. n.d. 10" h x 8" w. In very good condition. An original Mishkin sepia portrait of the Hungarian mezzo, shown in an elegant dress. She has boldly inscribed and signed at the bottom with kindest wishes.
Matzenauer's Metropolitan Opera debut in Aida in 1911 was the stuff of operatic dreams: while she sang Amneris, Emmy Destinn sang Aida, Enrico Caruso sang Radamès, and Toscanini conducted. Matzenauer would go on to sing a variety of Italian and German roles at the Met for the next nineteen seasons. On one particularly remarkable occasion, she sang Kundry in Parsifal on just a few days' notice, and without ever having performed the part before.
