Nikisch, Arthur (1855-1922)
Cabinet Photograph Signed
"Arthur Nikisch". To Miss Sanford. n.d. (but photograph blind-stamped 1898 at lower right corner). 6.5" h x 4.25" w. Overall in very good condition with light wear, including a few tiny scratches and a few minor ink marks (some over Nikisch's moustache). An original cabinet photograph of the great Hungarian conductor, which he has signed and inscribed at the bottom of the board on which it is pasted: To dear Miss Sanford in kind remembrance. A nice example.
Nikisch held prominent conducting positions in Budapest, Boston, Leipzig, and Berlin. In 1913, he became the first conductor to tour a European orchestra in the United States, and his recording of Beethoven's Fifth with the Berlin Philharmonic was among the earliest recordings of a complete symphony. Of Nikisch's interpretation of Brahms' Fourth Symphony, Brahms said: quite exemplary, it's impossible to hear any better.
