Otherwise in very good condition. The Austrian contralto signs an original black-and-white photograph of herself in a long dress and coat, sweetly inscribing with all my love, in memory of old, but oh! So happy times.
Schumann-Heink's distinguished career included performances under Gustav Mahler at Covent Garden, a nearly twenty-year engagement at the Bayreuth Festival, a performance of Brahms' Alto Rhapsody with the composer in attendance, and three decades of engagements at the Metropolitan Opera. Her annual radio performance of "Stille Nacht", both in German and in English, became a beloved Christmas tradition in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s.
PHO-00589$85Schumann-Heink was also known for her good nature and sense of humor. In 1892, while still trying to make a name for herself, she tried her luck on Broadway, appearing in an operetta called Love's Lottery. Audience members later recalled that the contralto interrupted her own performance several times in order to ask them whether or not her "English was good".
