Eugene Ormandy first conducted the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1931 as a substitute for the indisposed Toscanini. By 1936 he had joined Leopold Stokowski as the ensemble's joint conductor, and two years later he held the post alone. His tenure, which lasted until 1984, was and remains the longest-ever appointment between a conductor and an American orchestra.
