Castro studied under d'Indy in Paris before returning to Argentina to accept a conducting appointment at the Teatro Colón and a professorship at the Buenos Aires Conservatory. He was equally active as a composer and conductor throughout his career, and even led the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra the 1952/1953 season.
