Bodanzky began his conducting career as Mahler's assistant in Vienna. He accepted more posts in Germany and Prague before emigrating to the United States in 1915, where he became the head of German repertory at the Metropolitan Opera and a guest conductor at the New York Philharmonic. Although some disliked his predilection for fast tempi, he earned the praise of several eminent peers, including Toscanini, Busoni, and Beecham.
