Farrar, Geraldine (1882-1967)
Photograph Signed
"Geraldine Farrar". To Peter Hugh Reed. 1937. 10" h x 7" w. In excellent condition (with minor tear at upper-left, mostly affecting white margin). An original glossy black-and-white photograph portrait of the Metropolitan Opera star wearing a fur-trimmed coat and pearls. She has signed and inscribed the image to American music critic Peter Hugh Reed.
Geraldine Farrar was one of the leading sopranos of her time, celebrated in equal measure for her musical ability, acting prowess, and beauty. By the time Farrar signed this photograph, though, she had already been retired for fifteen years. Decades of overwork, which included upwards of thirty performances a season at the Metropolitan Opera alone, caused the premature deterioration of her voice.
