Philippe Halsman (1906-1979) was one of the world's most renowned photographers, best known for his collaboration with Salvador Dali and his many celebrity Life covers, which included portraits of Albert Einstein, Alfred Hitchcock, Marilyn Monroe, Pablo Picasso, Judy Garland, and President John F. Kennedy, among others. Born in Riga, he was accused of his father's murder while on a trip in Austria and imprisoned. Declaring his innocence and convinced that the accusation was a flagrant antisemitic act, he received support from notables such as Siegmund Freud, Albert Einstein, and Thomas Mann. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1947 with Einstein's help.
