Stokowski, Leopold (1882-1977)

Photograph Signed

"Leopold S". To Jean [Tennyson]. c. 10" h x 8" w. In very good condition. Laid down on cardboard. Minor creasing at bottom right corner.
The conductor signs this striking original matte black-and-white headshot to Jean Tennyson, the operatic soprano and noted arts patron. Because Stokowski uses purple grease pencil on a dark background, the signature is seen to best advantage under light.
Although Leopold Stokowski is best remembered for his long and successful tenure at the Philadelphia Orchestra, he also held the directorships of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, NBC Symphony Orchestra, and New York Philharmonic, among several others. He frequently conducted for Hollywood, as well, and recorded the music for Disney's Fantasia. His impressive sixty-year career spanned from 1909 to 1977.
