Stravinsky, Igor (1882-1971)

Photograph Signed

"I Stravinsky". To Louis Sherman. "N.I.", January 21, 1937. Photograph size: 7.75" h x 4.75" w. Total size in frame: c. 14.25" h x 11.25" w. In excellent condition and nicely framed.
An original pre-war photograph of the great Russian composer at the podium. He has signed and inscribed the image to Louis Sherman, a New-York-based electronic musician and producer.
Although he is primarily remembered as a composer, Stravinsky was also an accomplished conductor. He made his conducting debut with his own Firebird in 1916 and regularly accepted conducting appointments throughout the 1920s. As his European royalties dried up during World War II, Stravinsky accepted as many conducting jobs as he could to make ends meet, signing several contracts to record his own music and winning five Grammy Awards as a result. Of Stravinsky's conducting, fellow composer Philip Glass once remarked, he conducted with an energy and vividness that completely conveyed his every musical intention.
