Pair of Signed Lithographs Heralding Music.
Late 1960s. Each is matted and in a simple black frame, with a total dimension of c. 22" h x 18" w. Both are in pristine condition. The Sorcerer of Music is #27 of an edition of 275 (XXVII/CCLXXV) and The Triumph of Music is #219 (CCXIX) of the same edition.A pair of signed and numbered original lithographs with Chagall's famous and delightful musical images The Triumph of Music and The Sorcerer of Music. These two lithographs portray the same images as the thirty-foot murals Chagall painted in 1966 for the opening of the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in New York City, and which are visible from Lincoln Square Plaza.
GPH-16225$750The Triumph of Music (the red mural on the south wall at Lincoln Center) includes a depiction of Met director Rudolf Bing playing a mandolin (at lower left). In The Sorcerer of Music (the yellow and green mural), Orpheus is shown with his lyre, underneath whom Mozart flies above a depiction Manhattan populated by characters from The Magic Flute. Notably, these murals were commissioned at the time the Met designed the set and costumes for the inaugural, season-opening performance of The Magic Flute.
