It created a splash with its publication, though, for promoting some borderline iconoclastic ideas: that there is no difference between consonance and dissonance, that non-harmonic tones cannot exist, and that tone color is as important a musical parameter as pitch and rhythm.
The treatise was and remains an excellent starting point for the study of both early-twentieth-century music and Schoenberg's compositional approach.
