  Schoenberg's influential and exhaustive Harmonielehre, which he wrote between 1910 and 1911, covers all manner of topics relating to harmonic theory, from fundamental bass to tonality to twelve-tone rows. It created a splash with its publication, though, for promoting some borderline iconoclastic ideas: that there is no difference between consonance and dissonance, that non-harmonic tones cannot exist, and that tone color is as important a musical parameter as pitch and rhythm.

  The treatise was and remains an excellent starting point for the study of both early-twentieth-century music and Schoenberg's compositional approach.
