  The eminent Bohemian conductor, educator, composer, and pianist settled in London with his new wife, Charlotte, in 1825. He began teaching piano privately and at the Royal Academy of Music, gaining a notable roster of students that included Henry Litolff and Sigismond Thalberg. This enduring collection of etudes followed in 1827.

  While the first edition of this famous violin method is certainly the most scarce, it is the second and subsequent editions that make the first printed mentions of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. When the first edition went to the publisher, the younger Mozart had not been born.

  Engraved series title page with vignette. Includes notice on last leaf indicating which texts of the canons are original and which differ from the original.

  These are 16 of the 20-odd canons Mozart wrote. Needless to say, the first publication expurgated the original words, since Mozart, known by his intimate circle for his earthiness, had composed them for private performance using scatalogical texts such as "Leck mich im Arsch" ("Lick my ass", K231). The so-called "Romantic" Sonatas for violin and piano (piano part only included here) were long thought to be by Mozart. Indeed, at the time of this publication, no one doubted that they were by Mozart. The original Köchel catalog of 1862 included them as K55-60, but modern scholarship has demonstrated them to have no authentic association with Mozart, either stylistically or from documentary evidence.

Several oily stains on title page (which bleed through to p. 1 of manuscript). Some sunning and minor wear at edges. Professional repairs to final pages and spine reinforced with paper tape.

  A professional copyist's manuscript, likely copied from Artaria's first edition of the work (as Opus 11). Dated at the end of the MS, and inscribed in German on the title page at Verona, 7th October, 1856.

  This is an interesting example of a kind of manuscript that was relatively common, copied from a printed edition because a manuscript copy could be produced more cheaply than the purchase of an engraved edition. Also, in 1842 Italy, it might have been difficult to find a printed edition of this particular work. This specific manuscript was clearly a performer's copy, having pencilled fingerings throughout.

  This volume, published in 1803 as per the Köchel catalogue, includes:

  [K. 448] Une Sonate pour deux Pianofortes [contains only Pianoforte Primo, which is how it was originally published - the secondo part seems to have been published separately].

  [K. 452 arranged as:] Quartetto pour le Pianoforte avec l'accompagnement de Violon, Alto et Violoncelle [piano part only, as was originally published].

  [K. 452] Un Quintetto pour le Pianoforte avec l'accompagnement de Hautbois, Clarinette, Cor et Basson [original version in full score].

Pl.n: XIV. first edition of this series. Engraved. Oblong quarto. 25 pp. + 20 pp. Etching on dust cover by Wenzel Amadeus Böhm. Marbled paper boards. Only the primo part is bound; the secondo part is slightly larger. Small tear on right edge of contents page. Some ink transfer, which is heavier on the secondo part. Secondo part also with some bumped corners. A very attractive copy overall; clean and crisp with deep impression.

  These parts for Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos, K. 448, have been extracted from the Cahier XIV of Breitkopf and Härtel's Oeuvres Compelettes de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which, as per the Köchel catalogue, was published in 1803. In its complete form, the Cahier XIV contained either the primo or secondo part of this duet as well as the full score and an arrangement of the Piano Quintet, K. 452. Since both of the piano parts for K. 448 were originally published separately, this is a nice playable assembly of the work.

  This volume contains the original full contents page even though K. 452 is not present.
